John’s Gospel expounds God’s aseity in trinitarian terms. The Father has “life in himself” and communicates that “life in himself” to the Son (Jn 5:26). God gives life to believers in the Son, but that life is distinct from the life that the Father gives to the Son, for the latter is a prevenient life by which the Father originally made the world through the Son and by which the Son raises those who are physically and spiritually dead (Jn 1:3–4; 5:25; 11:25–26).
